Designed entirely by the Navy's own Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, the frigate is a major milestone in India's indigenous warship-building journey.

What Makes It Special

INS Mahendragiri carries over 75% indigenous content, reflecting the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, giving it both high-speed performance and long endurance. The frigate features advanced stealth shaping that reduces its radar, acoustic, and infrared signatures, along with a high degree of automation.

Its arsenal includes BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, rocket launchers, and an AK-630 close-in weapon system — enabling it to fight threats in the air, on the surface, and underwater simultaneously.

The final ship, INS Vindhyagiri, will complete the programme. Construction involved over 200 MSMEs, generating roughly 4,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs.
